Selwyn and Northmead

For Somerset residents only

Short Breaks in the West Country!

Our two short breaks homes in Somerset are Selwyn House in Yeovil and Northmead, near Bridgwater. Both are run by Discovery, which is part of Dimensions.

We currently take bookings for Selwyn and Northmead only from people living in Somerset.

Fun times

At both Selwyn House and Northmead we create a welcoming environment that will help you to find and achieve your goals – however big or small. You might go bowling or to the cinema; a shopping trip might be combined with lunch out, a hairdressing appointment or a walk in the local countryside. Evenings might be spent cooking, socialising, joining in games night or simply relaxing after a busy day.

Safe, comfortable and well supported

We’ll assigned you a Key Worker who will oversee your support. This will include developing and maintaining your support plan and ensuring you get person centred care and support from staff trained in and aware of their individual needs and preferences.

Night time support is provided through waking night and/or sleep-in service, depending on the needs of the individuals staying within the homes. Our night time support is complemented by a range of monitoring technology, which may be required to keep people safe at night.

Both homes have individual en-suite bedrooms equipped (if required) with ceiling track hoists, in addition to assistive bathing facilities, accessible toilets and shower facilities.

Both venues boast a range of assistive technology to keep people safe, such as epilepsy sensors through to extraordinary sensory experiences provided by our ‘magic carpet’ and giant touch tables.

Time for you

We all need a break from time to time. But we know how difficult it can be to entrust your loved one’s care to others.

Our short breaks give you and your family time to rest and re-energise. You or your loved one might stay with us for days or weeks, regularly or as a one-off.

Some of the people who join us for a short break are experiencing testing times in the family home; a short break can defuse tensions and play a part in bringing relationships back onto an even keel – sometimes at short notice.

You can trust our teams

Our short breaks (sometimes called respite) support is provided by well-trained, caring colleagues fully committed to making even the shortest stay a positive experience.

Your support will be tailored to your needs and ambitions, whatever level of care and support you need and however long you choose to stay with us. You’ll meet new people, experience new things, and take part in a wide range of different activities.

When you visit, every member of our team will know exactly what you and your family want from your short break and how we can support you to achieve this.

For the first time we can go away knowing our loved one is cared for, so no more sleepless nights.

Support @home

We know your family home is generally your safest space. That’s why our short break team can also provides support into your family home. For example we can support with holidays or activities, and continuity of care if a family carer is taken ill.

This gives family carers confidence, flexibility and choice. Call us for a chat about what you need.

Road to recovery

Perhaps your loved one has had a hospital stay or an unexpected deterioration in health?

A short break can help regain their lost independence; re-teaching life skills or providing the time to allow for recovery.

Can we support you?

If you or your loved one is an adult with a learning disability or autism and living in Somerset with a commissioned service, personal budget, or if you are looking to fund additional support yourself, we are likely to be able to help.

Maybe you have profound or multiple disabilities. Perhaps you’ve a history of behaviours of distress or complex health needs such as dysphagia or epilepsy.

We’ll devise person-centred support to meet all your needs whilst at the same time focusing on your abilities, gifts, skills and ambitions.

We’ll treat you with the utmost respect for your dignity, privacy and any cultural or religious preferences you may have.
