“I’ve got a proper job… and that’s amazing!”
At Bryngarw Country Park in Wales, staff at the café always look forward to working alongside Sid.
Supported by colleagues from Dimensions Cymru, Sid has become an important part of the team, and he’s proud to have what he calls “a proper job.”
Sid’s café role grew from his involvement with Awen, a project that helps young people “be themselves and follow their passions as active participants in a democratic community.” Alongside his café work, Sid takes part in Awen’s woodworking initiative too.
From volunteer to paid work
When Sid first joined the café team, it was on a voluntary basis; “doing free trials first.” He quickly learned the ropes, and as Emma, an advocate from Awen, explains:
“He got so good at his job, he’s now got some paid employment.”
Sid now works every Tuesday from 10am to 12pm. He’s been in his home nearby for two years and enjoys being part of his local community.
Earning, choosing, and enjoying independence
Having a paid job means more than just money for Sid – it’s about choice and independence.
“I buy different kinds of things [with my pay], I buy clothes and all that, summer clothes. I want to get summer clothes – like shoes…”
He adds with a smile,
“If I want to, I can do anything for myself.”
Sid’s story inspires others
Sid’s story has struck a chord with people across Dimensions’ social media channels. On our Facebook page, his video has been viewed more than 10,500 times and liked nearly 100 times, making it one of our most popular organic videos.
Sid’s experience shows what’s possible when people are supported to use their skills, build confidence, and take up opportunities that truly belong to them.
