Life back on the road: How the Motability Scheme restored routine and joy for RW

RW has benefited from a Motability car for a number of years, becoming a vital part of his everyday life…
Life story

Assistant Locality Manager Maxine Anderson shared with us just how life-changing the Motability Scheme has been for one of the people she supports, RW.

For RW, who has autism and communicates without words, having access to his Motability car isn’t just about transport – it’s about independence, comfort, and the stability of his daily routine.

Maxine tells us that RW has benefited from a Motability car for a number of years, becoming a vital part of his everyday life. However, when his previous car was due for an upgrade, there was a long delay before the new one arrived. As a result, RW was without a car for almost a year, and the impact on his wellbeing was significant.

RW thrives on structure and routine, going out in his car three times a day is a big part of that. Without it, his world suddenly became much smaller.

During that period, RW had to rely on taxis for essential appointments, which was not only costly but also unsettling for him.

Determined to keep life as normal as possible, Maxine and the team – working closely with the Behavioural Support Team (BST) – supported RW in continuing to get out and about.

They spent hours walking around the local area, helping him manage his anxiety and stay connected while waiting for his new car to arrive.

When RW’s new Motability car finally arrived, it brought a renewed sense of calm and joy. His familiar routine returned – three drives a day, exploring the countryside, going for walks, or heading out for food and appointments. He even started swimming again, something he had stopped when he was without a car, as the pool he loves is several miles away and taxi fares had become too expensive.

The Motability Scheme doesn’t just provide a car,” says Maxine. “It gives people like RW the freedom to live their lives to the fullest. It restores normality, builds confidence, and helps people stay connected to the world around them.

The Motability Scheme plays a crucial role in supporting people with learning disabilities and/or autistic people across the country. For many, having access to a car isn’t simply a convenience – it’s a lifeline. It allows people to attend vital appointments, visit friends and family, enjoy hobbies, and take part in local activities. Most importantly, it offers the independence and stability that so many people with additional needs rely on to feel safe, settled, and fulfilled.

RW’s story shines a light on why schemes like Motability are so essential. They don’t just open doors – they open lives, giving people the chance to live with confidence, freedom, and choice every single day.
