Learning new skills, having fun and living life to the full

Nina, whose smile lights up our website, doesn’t let her profound and multiple learning disabilities stop her from achieving her dreams.
Life story

Smile!

Nina has a smile that lights up the room and it is clear she feels happy and well supported. The rapport between her and her team is wonderful; many have supported her for years with learning new skills, having fun and living life. They all care about her hugely.

Nina loves baking, stirring the mixtures, and experiencing all the different textures and smells. On a recent photo shoot she was supported to bake cookies for everyone, and while she couldn’t try these herself as she uses a peg, she took great delight in seeing everyone’s positive reactions to her cooking.

Communicating together

Nina Facetimes her mum every morning.

She doesn’t communicate with words but makes her preferences known through body language, facial expressions, and that wonderful smile.

Daily living

Nina has her own bright and modern home, part of a small development of purpose-built housing for people with learning disabilities.

Each day Nina chooses what she wants to wear for the day – having independence in so-called ‘little things’ is so important for us all.

Nina has an adapted car so she can get out and about easily and enjoys being with her friends and socialising.

Nina enjoys music (especially when there are lots of lights), she likes going to the cinema and theatre and attends Wheelers and Wobblers – a sports and social group for people with physical and learning disabilities.

Arts and crafts are another favourite for Nina; she has produced some fabulous artwork that is proudly displayed around her home.

Even a regular dental check is good fun with Nina knowing the dentist well and having her own special chair.

Adventuring

Her support team encourages her to try new things; she has many fun and varied days out and experiences.

Nina especially loves adrenaline-fuelled adventures, including fast-speed boat rides, rock climbing, and weekly horse and carriage riding.

We enjoyed accompanying Nina carriage riding, and you could see how much fun she had, especially when it went really fast.

Learning from Nina

Nina does not let her disabilities stop her from loving and living her life and embraces every single day with positivity and happiness.

We hope her story helps anyone who loves or supports a person with profound and multiple learning disabilities to believe in better; to find new ways to listen and to experience the thrill of supporting someone to really live life on their terms.
