From restriction to independence: Bobby’s journey

After years in hospital and intensive support, Bobby has built a fulfilling life in his community. Today, he works, travels independently, and helps shape better support.
Life story

Bobby’s early life was marked by significant challenges. He experienced abuse as a child, lived through his parents’ divorce, and struggled with difficult family relationships. Having been exposed to inappropriate sexual content from a very young age, Bobby’s understanding of relationships and boundaries was deeply affected.

As a young adult, these experiences contributed to behaviours that led to his arrest and subsequent detention in hospital. At the age of 18, Bobby was made subject to a Hospital Order with restrictions under Sections 37 and 41 of the Mental Health Act. He spent around five years in hospital.

During this time, Bobby engaged positively with professionals, but he found it difficult to fully understand the impact of his actions on others. Although he participated in support and treatment, he struggled to take responsibility for what had happened and did not yet recognise the harm caused.

When Bobby began receiving support from Dimensions, he was living with significant restrictions and required one-to-one support at all times. In the early stages, he often minimised his past actions and found it difficult to trust new people. However, he quickly developed positive relationships with his support team, creating the foundation for meaningful progress.

Moving back into the community brought new challenges. Bobby was determined to make the right choices and avoid getting into trouble again. As a result, he often felt anxious about making decisions, worrying that mistakes could have serious consequences.

With encouragement from his support team, Bobby gradually gained confidence and began building a life that reflected his interests and goals. He started attending football matches, joined a pool team, visited the library regularly and enjoyed spending time with his mum every fortnight. A particularly memorable milestone was a trip to Brighton before Christmas – his first visit to the seaside since childhood.

Building a meaningful future

Over time, Bobby and his support team worked together to balance independence with safety, helping him build a fulfilling life while managing risks and meeting the conditions of his restrictions.

As Bobby’s confidence and understanding grew, many of those restrictions were reduced. This gave him greater freedom to make decisions, engage in his community and take on new opportunities independently.

Today, Bobby demonstrates a deep understanding of his past and the impact of his actions. He shows empathy towards others and has built positive relationships with friends, colleagues and his support team.

One of Bobby’s greatest achievements has been his work as an Expert by Experience. He now holds two paid roles, using his lived experience to help improve health and social care services. Through these positions, he has travelled independently across the country, delivered presentations to large audiences and contributed to the learning and development of professionals.

His contributions have been recognised with several Inspiring People awards, celebrating the positive difference he has made through his work.

Outside of employment, Bobby enjoys an active social life. He regularly spends time with friends and travels to events and gaming tournaments across the country, pursuing a passion that brings him both enjoyment and connection.

Increasing independence, reducing support

Bobby’s journey is also reflected in the significant reduction in the support he now requires.

Previously Bobby received 24-hour one-to-one support, including overnight sleep-in support, totalling 112 hours each week. After 10 years of progress with Dimensions, his support package has been reduced several times. Today, he receives just nine hours of one-to-one support each week and no longer requires overnight support.

This increased independence has also delivered substantial cost savings. Bobby’s original support package cost £2,495.21 per week. Today, it costs £432.72 per week – a reduction of £2,062.49 per week.

Bobby’s story shows what can be achieved when people are given the right support, opportunities and belief in their potential. From living under significant restrictions to becoming an award-winning Expert by Experience, he has built a life defined not by his past, but by the positive contribution he makes today.
