Supported to run a rambling club in Wales

Stephen is a man who loves being outside and finds nature very calming.

He turned seventy this year and walking is not as easy as it used to be. He still gets out and about several times every week but now, sometimes needing a wheelchair, he has to plan the route carefully.

Stephen and his support staff discovered other people supported by Dimensions Cymru in Cardiff who also enjoyed walking, but had different levels of mobility. This prompted Stephen and his Support Workers to tell others about the walks they go on and the accessible routes they have found.

Over several weeks Stephen looked for other walking routes locally that were accessible for wheelchair users or people who struggle with their mobility. Stephen was then supported by his staff to put together a six month plan of accessible walks and invite other people to join him.

Stephen now leads two walks every month. He has been supported to advertise the walks, and now has people coming along to join him from all over Cardiff.

Stephen’s group provides a free activity for people to socialise and enjoy rambling, knowing the routes will be appropriately accessible. Through running this group Stephen has also found that his own social circle has grown.
