Working together to fundraise for a new sensory garden in Kent

Our team in London and the East and one of the people we support have been fundraising for a new sensory garden to be build in Kent.

The garden will help many people with learning disabilities enjoy the outdoors and be more in touch with their senses. It will cost around £15,000 to build and fundraising is still going strong.

Plans for the garden include:

• plants especially for sensory stimulus
• a barbecue area
• wheelchair swings
• an in-ground trampoline
• a nature area
• water fountains
• a new shed
• car parking
• access paving

Raising money

Tiffany is a volunteer fundraiser and also a support worker. She has already hosted a successful fundraiser last October, where she and other Dimensions employees held A Red Carpet Evening that was open to the public and raised a massive £3,000.

The night included champagne on arrival, a three-course meal with the “Fawlty Towers diamond experience”, a live band and photographs on the red carpet.

Due to the success of the night, Tiffany and Tara, locality manager for the area, have plans for a jazzy cabaret fundraiser night as well as many other ideas this year to continue raising money for this fantastic cause.

Their next big event will be their charity Car Wash on Saturday 6th May in Capel-Le-Ferne.

Another person who is volunteering for us as a fundraiser for the garden is Stephen, who is supported by Dimensions. Stephen is 46 and has cerebral palsy.

He was inspired to help others when he watched one of his favourite celebrities, Davina McCall complete a 500-mile marathon for Sports Relief in 2014.

He was also inspired by the story of a family working in dangerous conditions at a quarry and the children dreaming of going to school.

Sports Relief helped them achieve that dream and, in turn, Stephen wants to help others achieve their dreams too.

Last September, he raised an incredible £1614.90 for Sports Relief by swimming 30 lengths of a swimming pool. This September, he wants to swim 50 lengths for the sensory garden and is dedicated to the cause.
