Building your career path – Anthony’s journey

Anthony joined us as a support worker ten years ago and used Aspire, our career development programme, to open opportunities and progress his career. Here’s his story:

Anthony Unomah

Why did you apply for Aspire?

In all honesty, I was stuck in a bit of a rut and I felt in need of a change. I was open with my manager about this and he suggested that I apply for Aspire.

Sadly my application was declined on that first occasion, but I personally believe that, in life, you should never give up, so I decided to give it another go and I was successful.

Another reason for me wanting to join was that there are generally less people from minority backgrounds in senior management positions across organisations. I want to change that and be a positive role model to others.

What career path are you following, with help from Aspire?

My initial goal was to be able to do a Level 5 Diploma course in Health and Social Care and my second to become a locality manager.

I gave myself a year to complete both tasks and I feel both lucky and thankful to say that I have achieved both of my goals.

How has the programme helped you?

For me, Aspire has been the ladder that I needed to take me to my destination. It has helped me to jump hurdles that I couldn’t if it didn’t exist and it has opened so many doors for me.

I used to be very shy and not very confident. I mentioned this to my coach and together we worked hard for me to overcome it. Now, I can speak to people with ease, I can even address a crowd. I have really come out of my shell.

I took on everything I could from the programme and learned from the coaches and the other participants. I had a great relationship with my coach and she was so supportive. She made me realise that Aspire was the opportunity I’d always wanted.

You have to be focussed and know what you want to get out of the programme and although you may not know that at the beginning, gradually it will all become clear to you.

Are your colleagues supporting you to complete the programme?

Absolutely – it was my manager at the time who encouraged me to apply. He was so supportive and saw the potential in me.

I want to be that kind of manager to others. He always made sure that I had the support and time needed to give my all to Aspire without compromising my day job at the same time.

Anything you’d like to say to future participants?

I would encourage people to take advantage of such a great opportunity – Dimensions have got things very right in creating Aspire.

I want people to experience that same opportunity for others. It has transformed my life and made me a better person.
