Celebrating success in Olympic style

8 February 2010

Para-Olympian, Stephen Miller, is backing an event in Sunderland that will celebrate the successes of local people with learning difficulties.

Stephen, an athlete who has represented the country for more than a decade, will present our local 'special Olympians' with medals at an event hosted by Dimensions; a not for profit provider of support for people with learning disabilities and autism. More than 150 are expected to attend the celebratory event at the Quayside Exchange on 11th March.

Leanne Geritz, of Dimensions, said: "We were really pleased to hear that Stephen would attend. There are few people more inspirational. He has represented Britain for over 10 years, competed in four Paralympic Games and three World Championships. This is a special day for us all as we celebrate the many successes of some of the people we support across the north east. We'll hear about people who have overcome their own challenges to achieve their dreams."

During the event, which has been sponsored by the Greggs Foundation, there will be entertainment from a local theatre group Large Productions. There will also be activities that include a sensory room and sound beam, arts and crafts by Alan Shearer centre as well as a music-themed fancy dress. Dimensions currently supports more than 2,300 people in England and Wales and 130 people in the North East.
