Event to benefit families

1 February 2010

Parents of children with learning disabilities or autism are being invited to a free event in Bracknell to find out what opportunities are out there for their children.

Dimensions, a not-for-profit provider of support for people with learning disabilities and autism, is hosting the event specifically to help parents find the support they may need once their children have left school.

Parents will get the chance to hear about what support is available locally, gain expert advice and talk to other parents in similar situations. Nick Ireland and Simon McKenzie of Bracknell Forest County Council will be speaking at the event.

The event will take place at The Grange Bracknell Hotel, Charles Square, Bracknell, on 31st March between 9.30am and 2pm.

"This event is an invaluable opportunity for parents, who often feel that they are out there on their own," said Kate Jackson of Dimensions. "Many are often not sure what options are available to their children once they've left school and are moving into adulthood – a period often referred to as 'transition.'

"Contrary to belief, there are lots of opportunities out there and we want to guide parents and their children through this time. They may want to find a job, choose a training course or move out of the family home and live independently."

Dimensions currently supports more than 2,300 people and its specialist transition service supports well over 200 young people and their families through the transition process. The service supports those aged between 14 and 25 to plan their future and get the most out of their life.
