Call for support

18 January 2010

Plans to get a gardening project off the ground for people with autism and learning disabilities in Hertfordshire could falter if support isn't found.

An appeal has been made by Dimensions - an organisation that supports people with learning disabilities and autism - for businesses and community groups to get behind the plans.

The group, who all attend a day service at the QEQM Resource Centre in Brickett Wood, want to create their own allotment on land at Elstree. While land has already been found by Dimensions, additional funding and materials are needed to help turn the group's dreams into reality.

Lauren Butler, Project Manager at Dimensions' QEQM Centre, said: "Some of the people we support have said that they like to get involved in gardening and would really benefit from the achievement that comes from growing, eating and even selling your own produce. We have managed to acquire the land but we now need help to make the rest happen.

"The group has big plans to make it work and they have the motivation but need just a little backing. They really need either funding or donations of material from local businesses such as fencing, sleepers and paving slabs, so that we can to create raised beds.

"We also need some volunteers to help us clear the land. I'm sure there are people who are more than willing to help out and we would like to hear from them so that together we can turn the land into allotments for the group to enjoy."

Dimensions is one of the UK's largest providers of support services for people with learning disabilities and autism. It supports more than 2,300 people across England and Wales.

  • Companies or voluntary groups that are able to help Dimensions to get the project going are urged to call Lauren at Dimensions on 01923 678523.
