At Dimensions, we are championing family involvement in people’s support through our Family Focus campaign. This year will see many changes in the social care sector and people with learning disabilities and autism will need the support of their family as well as support providers.
The government has set a target for all people to receive social care funding through Personal Budgets. There is also going to be a push for everyone in inappropriate hospital settings to move to community-based support by June 2014, following the Department of Health’s Winterbourne View Review.
The same review highlighted the importance of family, stating: “People with learning disabilities or autism, who also have mental health conditions or challenging behaviour can be, and have a right to be, given the support and care they need in the community, near to family and friends.”
These are just a few of the ways in which we see family involvement as being crucial to providing the best possible support.
